@noisms: I think ...Sorry for the delayed response.

@noisms: I think if the writers addressed some of questions and problems this could shrink in size by quite a bit. And while I think B/X is still exemplary in many ways I think there is still room for improvement (handling time in the dungeon for example boggled me as a 12 year old).

@Mr. Blue: I realize now that the dragon toy is interesting because it is the one thing that really points outside the room and even toward the possibility of parley.

@Aaron: Thanks. It took about an hour but I learned a lot too. I think this kind of record-of-your thoughts is probably the best approach to a review instead of just breaking it down into a binary of pros and cons.

@Darnizhaan: I've long been trying to make random treasure item generators and this is one of the things that makes it hard. There are lots of things that can add value to something. In this case exotic or extinct wood, one of a kind item, hand-carved by an artisan that is dead now, etc.

@Jez: Thanks again for starting the discussion. It easy for people to point out flaws, harder to try and share something you like.

This all has me thinking of several different possible goals for a sample dungeon including: teaching someone the basics of the genre (dungeons, kobolds, giant spiders), teaching how to DM, teaching how to design dungeons, and teaching how a particular system of rules work. Each of these goals could result in different features and maybe contradictory ones.Telecanterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07238356788092725244noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6446461178381374626.post-40513236940881431512013-08-18T17:08:39.403-07:002013-08-18T17:08:39.403-07:00My opinion of the page has been lowered somewhat f...My opinion of the page has been lowered somewhat following its vivisection on G+, but I'm very glad to have posted it and the discussions that followed (including this one).

@ Noisms: From what I can tell the market segment for the Pathfinder Beginner Box is the same as the original Red Box D&D: 8-12 year olds who have never gamed before but are keen to learn how, with the purpose of using it as a stepping stone to the full Pathfinder game. They've streamlined the chargen, limited the classes, races, skills, and the endless lists of feats. it's over-explained with the intention of never having to leave the page to ref charts and info elsewhere.Jezhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09648892955926127864noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6446461178381374626.post-91094668701871781592013-08-17T07:41:59.728-07:002013-08-17T07:41:59.728-07:00The wooden dragon toy is worth 50 gold pieces? Beginner DMs in the red box era who were 11 years old didn't need this level of detail, so I don't get why this hand-holding is necessary. noismshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09933436762608669966noreply@blogger.com
